What Is Process Piping?

Piping refers to the system of pipes used to transport fluids (such as liquids, gases) from one location to another. The engineering discipline focused on this is known as piping engineering. While it’s a crucial element across various industries, its design, material, and setup can significantly differ depending on its intended application, whether it’s for residential plumbing, industrial manufacturing, oil, and gas transportation, or more.

Process Piping, a sub-category of piping, is a specialized system of pipes used in industries to transport fluids between different parts of a manufacturing or industrial facility. Unlike traditional piping, process piping is not used for general utility services such as water, sewer, or HVAC but is specifically designed and installed to transport raw materials, waste products, chemicals, gases, and other substances throughout the process of manufacturing, refining, or other industrial operations.

Types of Pipes We Carry

We sell three primary types of pipe: carbon steel pipestainless-steel pipe, and chrome moly pipe. We offer a variety of sizes, grades, and coated pipe to suit your project’s needs, depending on your industry and the pipes that need transporting.

Pipe Sizing

Our pipes are available in a broad range of sizes and wall thicknesses from SCH5 to XXS. We will help you select the solution with the optimal Nominal Pipe Size and Outside Diameter for your applications.

Seamless vs. Welded Piping

Pipe manufacturing primarily involves two techniques: seamless and welded, both of which are supplied by Industrial Pipe & Valve.

Seamless Pipe

Seamless pipes are manufactured through an extrusion process. In this process, a solid billet or cylindrical ingot of steel is heated and then pushed or pulled over a piercing rod, creating a hollow tube or shell. Due to the method of manufacturing, seamless pipes are generally considered to be more uniform and stronger than welded pipes, having no weak seam. Seamless pipes are primarily used when strength and resistance to corrosion under high temperatures and pressures are required, such as in the oil and gas industry, power plants, and chemical processes.

Welded Pipe

Welded pipes, on the other hand, are made from a strip or plate of steel that is bent into a circular shape and then welded along its seam, creating a “weld seam.” Welded pipes are typically more cost-effective than seamless pipes and can be produced in longer lengths. There are two main methods of producing welded pipes: Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). ERW is commonly used for smaller-diameter pipes, while SAW is used for larger-diameter pipes. Welded pipes are commonly used in low to medium-pressure applications such as water and gas transportation, structural applications, and piling.

We understand that each project has unique requirements. That’s why we offer both seamless and welded pipes in a variety of materials, sizes, and specifications. Contact us online or call (409) 736-7667 today!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of seamless pipes over welded pipes?

Seamless pipes are generally considered more uniform and stronger due to the absence of a weak seam. They are ideal for applications requiring strength and corrosion resistance under high temperatures and pressures. Welded pipes, however, are typically more cost-effective and can be produced in longer lengths.

Why is the material of the pipe important in industrial applications?

The material of the pipe determines its strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and ability to handle specific temperatures and pressures. Choosing the right material ensures the safety and efficiency of the transportation process, especially in industrial settings.

What is the life span of stainless-steel pipes?

With proper maintenance and under normal conditions, stainless-steel pipes can last several decades. Their longevity is due to their resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand various industrial conditions.

How does the wall thickness of a pipe affect its performance?

The wall thickness determines the pipe’s strength, its ability to handle pressure, and its resistance to external forces. Thicker walls can handle higher pressures, while thinner walls are lighter and more suitable for applications with lower pressures.
